The Affiliate Scientist Program is a major strength of the WaNPRC, representing numerous scientists from the University of Washington as well as other institutions both nationally and internationally. Through independent research programs, affiliates make extensive use of WaNPRC resources to expand the scope of research to fulfill our mission.
Affiliate Scientists are scientists who conduct NHP research, collaborate with WaNPRC core scientists and staff and/or utilize WaNPRC resources, services, and facilities.
Scientists who visit or consult with the NPRC to learn a procedure or obtain advice, but who otherwise do not use NPRC resources, are not considered affiliate scientists. Likewise, investigators who obtain services, resources such as animals, or materials such as tissue samples on a fee for service basis, but who otherwise do not collaborate with NPRC personnel, are not considered affiliate scientists.
Our Affiliate Scientists are associated with one of our four units of scientific excellence: Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (GTRM); Global Conservation, Education and Outreach (GCEO); Infectious Diseases and Translational Medicine (IDTM) and Neuroscience. They often have other appointments at the University of Washington but may be researchers from institutions outside of the University of Washington.
In order to be considered for Affiliate Scientist status within the WaNPRC, the following information is required:
- Curriculum vitae
- Research interests/categories
- Description of proposed research
- General services, resources and facilities required
- Biosketch and other support document
The WaNPRC Director appoints affiliate scientists upon, recommendation by a Unit Chief, review of their qualifications and vote by core scientists. Affiliate scientists are assured of a working relationship with WaNPRC staff and have access to the facilities and resources of the WaNPRC for regular or intermittent periods necessary to complete their research projects.
