The Neuroscience Unit is dedicated to supporting innovative state-of-the-art neuroscience research with nonhuman primates for scientific programs both within and outside the Washington National Primate Research Center. Its Scientific Primate Resources component consists of 8 Core Staff and 11 Research Affiliate laboratories, all housed within the Center. These labs provide research services, training, consulting and collaborative expertise in the areas of primate sensory, motor and cognitive neuroscience. All Core Staff use the primate model exclusively, pose questions whose answers impact directly on the function and treatment of the human nervous system, and have strong extramural funding.
Individual Core Staff and Research Affiliates:
- Train graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists in specialized neuroscience techniques
- Collaborate with investigators outside the center on “service projects” not supported by other grants
- Serve on editorial boards and review research papers and grant applications concerning nonhuman primates
- Perform other administrative activities within the center such as committee service and report writing
The Unit includes the Instrumentation Services Core, which performs crucial functions that allow the Unit to fulfill its mission of providing a stimulating environment in which neuroscientists can gain research experience with nonhuman primates.
