The Pathogen Detection Services Laboratory (PDSL), located at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) in Seattle, is a resource for analytical assays and specialized nonhuman primate materials used for analytical testing. The PDSL regularly monitors all Washington National Primate Research Center nonhuman primates (NHP) and externally submitted specimens to help maintain and enhance the overall health of macaques. The monitoring also serves as the basis for segregating NHP into stratified Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) colony levels.
Serology and PCR
- Type D simian retrovirus – all serotypes serology and PCR
- Simian T cell leukemia virus – STLV1, STLV2 serology and PCR
- Macaque herpesvirus 1 (B virus) – serology

- PAN-coronavirus serology panel can be run to detect antibodies to the N and S proteins of SARS-CoV-2 and four seasonal strains 229E, NL-63, OC43 and HKU-1
Multiplex PCR to detect or quantify SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A, Influenza B in one swab sample.
BioFire system Multiplex Pathogen Panels – Multiplex PCR detection
One swab sample is required to test an animal for each panel of pathogens:
- Respiratory pathogen panel (includes SARS-CoV-2 and 20 others pathogens)
- Gastrointestinal panel (Includes bacteria, viruses, parasites, 23 total pathogens)
- Pneumonia panel (Includes bacteria, bacterial antibiotic resistance genes and viruses, 33 total pathogens)
- Meningitis/Encephalitis panel (Includes bacteria, viruses and yeast (14 total pathogens)
Specialized NHP pathogen reagents and assays
- SRV 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 purified antigen preparations (~1 mg/ml)
